Work In Progress v0.2

Even though I was standing on snow and ice the whole time, it felt like spring. Opted for a flood thing instead, here's the result.

À l'écoute

Tommy Guerrero's From the Soil to the Soul (Quannum)
Very good grooves, beautiful guitar work with the usual clean cut drum beats. Nice vocal appearances by various guest artists. A good entry album if you don't know Guerrero's work.

The Album Leaf's Into the Blue Again (City Slang/Sub Pop)
Took a few listens to be able to gage it properly. But I came to, and yes, I like it. Not as much as earlier works by Andrews, but it has it's own thing going on. Let it wash all over you?

Work In Progess v0.1

The Dilbert concept (see Work In Progress v0.0) got turned down. It's love-hate with Dilbert I found out. So I'm trying an Edward Gorey theme instead. His character called the Doubtful Guest will be featured with his scarf tangled up within the letters. He'll simply stand there looking nonchalant about the whole mess.

Very Big Bear

I just came across this subtle piece by Tim Hawkinson. When I read who it was by, I had to stop and think about it–nothing I've seen of his is ever simple. It looks it, but never is. The sculpture was done in 2001 for the University of California in San Diego, as part of the Stuart Collection. It's made up of eight very large boulders, and weight 180 tons. Here are production photos.

Eleanor Bond

Winnipeg-born painter Eleanor Bond makes up environments with a better design for those who live within it. It's perhaps ironic that her work offers ideas of major technological advancements towards a better human way of life—as if she's seen the ideal future for us all—yet in this present, her trace or her work rather, is hard to find. I'm going to dig around a little more and see what I can unearth.

Work In Progress v0.0

Here are preliminary sketches for a mural I will be producing just as soon as most of the snow melts here in Toronto. I will base the letters on the blue pencil sketch, adding a collision between the H and the O in the centre, as shown in the red sketch. I will then paint on the far left, Dilbert with spray-can getting caught by two agents coming in on the right. Should be pretty funny.

More From Arman

Here's a few more works by the late Arman. (All images from various sources).

Accumulations

Shown here is a sculpture by the late French artist Arman (Armand Pierre Fernandez) commissioned for the Lebanese Ministry of Defence. The sculpture, entitled Hope for Peace, weighs over 6000 tons and measures 106 feet in height. Arman had made an earlier study in 1976, but couldn't get the funds to execute the full-scale piece. He was finally able to have it made in 1996, as a memorial to the Lebanese Civil War.

Both photos by Stuart Whatling.
